The Three Laws of Robotics

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.


R. Daneel Olivaw is a prototype humaniform robot, created by Dr. Han Fastolfe and Dr. Roj Nemennuh Sarton. Externally, he is physically indistinguishable from a human being, detailed and anatomically corect, with realistic-feeling artifical skin, hair, and body warmth. His eyes even produce a tear-like moisture for the purposes of lubrication and cleaning. Internally, he possesses a positronic brain, a compact microfusion power source, a metallic skeleton with flexible metallic artificial "muscles" and "tendons," a rudimentary respiratory system that primarily serves as a means by which to use his artificial larynx to speak in a natural tone, and a fluorocarbon plastic stomach which can be removed to dispose of any food he might "eat" should he find it necessary to appear human.

R. Daneel Olivaw has been in operation for twenty decades. He gained some notoriety early in his existence for his work with the Earth detective Elijah Baley.

Currently, he is the unthinkable: a masterless robot, one who has done the impossible and circumvented the Three Laws of Robotics, if only to place the wellbeing of all humanity above that of individual humans. His goal of protecting humanity is aided by his own ability to think far more like a human than most robots, and by the mental powers gifted to him by R. Giskard Reventlov: the ability to not only sense the emotional state of minds around him, but to adjust them by strengthening or weakening those emotions.
